Day 5: An Invalid Excuse

Every year as a church, we pray & fast corporately for 21 days to get clear direction from God for our lives and the new year. This year, we will be reading the book of John together (1 chapter a day). Today is Day 5.

Day 5: An Invalid Excuse

Today's Reading: John, Chapter 5

Author: Sogol Pulley

John 5:1-9 (ESV)
1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. 3 In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. 5 One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be healed?" 7 The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me." 8 Jesus said to him, "Get up, take up your bed, and walk." 9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.

This passage is always interesting to me because we know Jesus to be all-knowing, and yet He still asks this man that had been waiting thirty-eight years if he "wanted to be healed?" Every single time I read this I say out loud, "Duh Jesus! Who doesn't want to be healed?" Strangely, when you continue to read the scriptures, this man doesn't burst out with joy and scream, "YES, MAKE ME WELL!" Instead, he continues with excuses. Excuses about how no one has helped him, or he's been too late. Here he is having dialogue with the Son of God, and he's giving Him the most invalid excuses as to why he hasn't been healed.

That sounds a lot like most of us. Our prayer time has turned into our hearts giving Jesus excuses about why our marriage isn't working, our kids aren't where they should be, or why we aren't moving forward in our walk with Him. Our entire nature is filled with blame and excuses as to why we haven't progressed in life, our businesses, our finances, and the list goes on.

Jesus is so good. He knows the man can't walk, yet He still asks him if he wants to be healed.

Jesus waits, listens to all of his excuses, blame, justifications, and reasoning and simply says to him, "Get up, take up your bed, and walk." The man did just that and walked off.

I believe Jesus is doing the very same thing with us today. He's listening to all of our invalid excuses and saying, "GET UP!" How much longer can we just continue to entertain the excuses of why we are unable to change, unable to move forward, unable to elevate in every area of our lives? When we respond with excuses for every hardship we face in our life, we are saying that Jesus can't do it. We are stating that our circumstances are far greater than the One who created the heavens and the universe.

Get up and see beyond your limitations.

Pick up your mat and all that God has for you. Get up, get plugged in, and serve and watch God transform your life through the relationships you make. Get up and tithe and see the supernatural God add up supernatural figures in your finances. Get up and seek counseling for your marriage, your children, your mental health. Get up and update your resume and look for a different job.

Wherever you're at, whatever roadblock you're facing: GET UP! Once you do, the Father will move you further and beyond.

Do you want to see beyond? Do you want to be healed? Get up!
