Day 8: Follow Me

Every year as a church, we pray & fast corporately for 21 days to get clear direction from God for our lives and the new year. This year, we will be reading the book of John together (1 chapter a day). Today is Day 8.

Today’s Reading: John, Chapter 8

Author: Nick Pulley

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12 (NKJV)

Have you ever gotten up in the middle of the night and tried to navigate your way through a dark room then stubbed your toe on the bedpost, another piece of furniture, or a wall? It is one of the most painful and frustrating feelings! Stumbling around in the darkness is no fun task, especially when a toe stub is involved. This is exactly what Jesus wants to keep us from. Well, for the toe-stubbing, wisdom says to install a night light. But, for this dark world, we need Him!

Jesus tells us that He is the light of the world, and if we follow Him, we will not walk in darkness.

We have this knowledge, but we have all found ourselves at times stumbling around hopeless and lost. In the past, I have gone through a season of trying so hard to get wisdom and absorb knowledge that I lost the light. I wanted so badly to know more, but in that effort, I ended up knowing Him less. That is a painful and frustrating place to be in.

In John 8, we read about the scribes and the Pharisees stumbling over themselves, trying to test and debate Jesus. He patiently continues to answer them and explain who He is, yet they never get it.

They had been following religious tradition so long that they couldn’t see beyond their head knowledge, the culture that they knew and followed, to notice the Savior of the world right in front of their faces. What a dangerous place to be, to know the words in the scriptures but not know The Word: Jesus Christ.

Especially in today’s polarizing and dark world, we must walk in the light and see beyond:

• Culture

• Politics

• Religiosity

• A successful career path

• The quest for more knowledge

• And whatever it may be that we can easily find ourselves following

• And keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.

In John 8:31-32, Jesus tells us,

“If you abide in My word you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.”

Abide in His Word, then watch how quickly He will bring you right back into the light. When we know the Word and also apply the Word, that is when we can walk in the light bringing hope to the hopeless, avoid senseless debates, forgive the unforgivable, and also follow the One who has called us.

Do you find yourself stumbling around in the dark? Are you having a hard time hearing from God? Do you feel like you might be following something or someone that God may not want you to? This time of prayer and fasting is the perfect opportunity to pray and let the Holy Spirit reveal to you an area in your life that you may not be following Jesus.
