Parents who homeschool their children are invited to an interest meeting for the brand new “Elevate Christian Academy” set to be launched by Elevate Church in August.
Students in the program can expect to meet weekly for Bible enrichment; reading, science and math labs; and music, art and painting lessons, according to church officials.
“We want to be able to connect with children wherever they’re gifted,” said Lead Pastor Mauricio Ruiz. “There’s so many amazing gifts and talents that kids have, and our goal is to help them tap into that potential that got placed in them and give them a fun way. I’m all about fun.”
Ruiz noted that he and his wife decided to homeschool their son after he attended both public and private Christian schools, but still had the same “challenges.”

“I think sometimes you have to do that for some kids, because as a parent, you can hit places in your life where you’re struggling with a child,” Ruiz said. “It’s not necessarily that they’re a bad student or that they’re not smart enough. Sometimes you just have to change the game a little bit. Everyone is different, everyone learns different.”
Deciding to homeschool his son was “the best thing” he could have done, according to Ruiz, but the difficulties he and his wife faced prompted them to want to start their own homeschool program -- including a support group for parents -- for the community.
“It was so difficult to find a place that, No. 1, shared our values, (and) No. 2, that really created an environment where it’s not just another classroom setting, but there’s actually this sense of creativity, there’s a sense of connectivity, there’s a sense of community,” he said. “And that’s something that we want to create.”
The interest meeting for Elevate Christian Academy is set for Saturday, May 4 at 9 a.m. at Elevate Church in Newhall, according to Ruiz.
“We have amazing people that really believe in home education,” Ruiz said. “I know there’s parents out there that may be struggling with their child, and I just want to encourage parents that maybe it’s not a child education issue, maybe it’s a little bit deeper. And if we can just give you a little bit more support to help you and partner with you, how amazing is that?”
