A free teen suicide awareness and prevention workshop is set to be held for parents in the community at a Santa Clarita church this weekend.
The event is set for Saturday, July 6 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Elevate Church in Newhall, located at 24346 Main Street.
“(Teen suicide) is a major, major issue, not just in Santa Clarita but everywhere,” said Mauricio Ruiz, lead pastor at Elevate Church. “It’s the second leading (cause of) death in teenagers, and we’re talking from the ages of 10 years old to 24 years old.”
Workshop attendees can expect to hear from a psychologist with expertise in working with parents whose teens may be suicidal, according to Ruiz.

Ruiz shared that he felt a calling to hold the event because of his experiences recently in his ministry.
“This year I was called by a family to do a funeral service for a 15-year-old kid who had committed suicide, and it’s the common thread that I’ve been hearing more, I think in the last maybe three to four years,” Ruiz said. “I keep hearing more and more teens from that age range I just mentioned that are committing suicide.”
He continued, “I think that if we can just bring parents some awareness and some understanding, we can prevent a lot of this, so that just really stirred my heart this year.”
